Vibration White Finger (or VWF) is a condition which occurs when there has been an extensive use of vibrating hand-held machinery, such as jigger picks, kango hammers, grinders, and other tools of a similar nature. The condition can affect the nerves, connective tissue, muscle, blood vessels or joints.
Symptoms include:
Fingers change colours – This is related to the blood vessels in the hands and occurs when exposed to the cold. This can happen for minutes at a time, and when the blood begins to circulate the individual may find a bluish tinge to their skin and an uncomfortable throbbing.
Tingling – After long periods of work, a tingling sensation may be felt by the individual and the tips of the fingers may go white. If this problem is reoccurring, then the whiteness may spread to the knuckles and last longer.
Loss of manual dexterity – In severe cases, loss of manual dexterity may occur in cold weather condition, thus rendering the individual unable to control their affected hands. This may also cause a lot of pain and reduce the strength of their grip.
If you have the above symptoms and have been exposed to vibration you may be able to claim compensation.
