Occupational Asthma
 
Although asthma is a common ailment, occupational asthma is asthma that has been bought on or made worse by working conditions. A lot of sufferers of occupational asthma find that their condition worsens when at work. Some symptoms include: asthma which worsens when at work, disturbances in sleep, other nose and throat-related ailments such as rhinitis or conjunctivitis
 
Occupations in which you may be at risk of contracting occupational asthma include:
 
Laboratory work, specifically when in contact with animals
Car spray painting
Farming
Cleaning
Welders and metalwork
Chemical processing
Plastic and textile manufacture
 
Substances that can cause occupational asthma include:
 
Dust from insects or animals.
Dust from latex rubber.
Dust from flour and grain.
Wood dust, in particular hardwood dusts.
Colophony, which is highly present in soldering fumes. Protection should be issued in a workplace in which glues and soldiering is prevalent to reduce irritation.
Chemicals – in particular, isocyanates – that are the most common cause of occupational asthma. Isocyanates are present in spray painting, foam moulding techniques and surface coatings.
